If you’ve never been to Lewiston, Maine, let us tell you: It. Gets. Cold. Every year, Bates College misses out on talented prospective students who opt for palm trees over snowmen. Bates approached Oxbow to help share the college’s unique winter traditions and welcoming community for their 2016 holiday campaign.
THE CONTEXT
Bates has a rich history, an iconic campus, and a vibrant community that some say shines brightest when blanketed under 3 feet of snow. Students, staff and faculty don’t shy away from the blustery winter months; they bundle up and embrace it.
THE APPROACH
Oxbow designed a 360° animated virtual reality sleigh ride through the Bates campus, sending the viewer through the heart of campus on a wooden toboggan. Riddled with historic Bates landmarks, traditions, and hidden nostalgic easter eggs, the journey immerses student prospects and alumni in a red, dreamy winter set to an old Bates fight song.
the results
The 360 video won Gold at the 2018 AVA Digital Awards in the category of Creative Video Production. The AVA Awards recognize and celebrate the excellence of creative professionals responsible for the planning, concept, direction, design and production of digital communication.
